Security comes at a price

My kids want to bike to school so we needed decent locks. You can get cheap cable locks for under $10 or a high-security Kryptonite chain lock for over $150. what to take Factors we consider to include the cost of the bikes themselves, ease of use, security, the environment in which the bikes are stored and the cost of the lock. Bikes are locked up at suburban high school during the day, and each bike costs about $500. Bikes can be locked up for long periods, but this is unlikely. We're not going to buy a cheap $80 cable lock, but we're not going to spend more than 25% of the price of a bike on an extra tall lock. a security chain lock that weighs too much. If the bikes cost more, or if we guarded them in a precarious environment, we could spend more. This lock seems to be a good balance and tends towards a higher price/security. They're heavy, but my boys don't mind putting them in their backpacks. Kryptonite makes frame bags for these chains, but they don't fit my boys' bikes. They are long enough to go through the rear wheel and frame but not the front wheel. This is acceptable in this environment. The cost (about $62) wasn't cheap, but it was reasonable. I signed up with Kryptonite for free theft insurance for a year. The lock itself comes with 3 keys which is nice and they have worked well so far. In general we are satisfied with them. My research shows that Kryptonite Evolution 4 series chains are among the best for most situations. Some of their more expensive options offer more security and weight.
