Review on Powerbuilt 23 Piece Ball Joint and U Joint Service Set - 648617: Efficient Tool Kit for Easy Ball Joint and U Joint Repair by Kyle Miller

Great buy for the price

Just replaced upper and lower ball joints on my 03 Durango. This kit is ideal for the weekend mechanic who needs to service several family members' cars at an attractive price. The number of adapters makes it easy to find the right combination to get the job done with almost anything (although I've heard that Honda's require additional adapters that aren't included in this kit). The C-clip is strong and held up well to my impact (don't forget to lube it!). I can't imagine how this thing bends, but I'm sure stranger things have happened. The case is also durable and you can carry it around without feeling like it's about to pop open and spill everything. So why not 5 stars you ask? In this case there is a very unpleasant thing. The label is on the wrong side. Most people expect that when you open the case, you'll open it from the side that has a nice big logo label and see all the parts placed in their slots. It's not like this. When you open it, everything is no longer in separate compartments, but simply rolls around on a flat surface on the side of the suitcase. Now you have to spend time installing adapters in the right slots instead of working on the project. This is an unacceptable design flaw because it's so easy to fix and they just didn't do it. I've rented the same kit from my local auto zone for years and Powerbuilt still hasn't fixed it.

Pros
  • Removal and installation of press-fit ball joints found on most vehicles
Cons
  • No instructions
