I have a '96 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) with a 4.0 V6. It has over 200,000 km. I don't know if the injectors have ever been changed. The engine ran rough when idling and the exhaust smelled strongly (too much petrol). After some research, I narrowed the cause down to a fuel injector (or more than one) that was stuck open, meaning it was supplying gas to the engine when it wasn't supposed to. This causes rough idling and, above all, the smell of gas from the exhaust. It was very strong! We couldn't keep the windows closed because it smelled. Injectors changed and no more smell of gas! Now it runs smooth as silk.
