Almost a guard. small in girth and length. Turning it "upside down" so that the buckles are under the elbow gives you good freedom of movement to bend a little at night and also offers good protection against over-stretching. However, I ordered another model for comparison which I found to be longer and warmer, for a better sense of security to get out and about without fear of further injury, and without the heavy equipment like I use for ROM to the house . I'm recovering from a major dislocation and in winter weather so it depends on what you need. This headband is more mesh and slightly cooler, also shorter, more like a half or 3/4 sleeve. just not enough stability for me.
