Review on Devilbiss N038785 Compressor Piston Assembly by Russell Roberson

Breathe new life into your old air compressor

I have rescued a very battered Dewalt D55146 Type 8 air compressor. It powered on normally but struggled to build pressure. I disassembled it and cleaned the hoses and fittings (the hose from the pressure switch to the tank was smeared with rusty brown water - huh?). Ordered a new air filter cartridge (replacement Solberg 04 paper filter for the compressor) and this kit N038785. By the way, this is a real N038785 kit, not a cheap Chinese fake. The kit includes a piston rod with a gasket already installed, a new cylinder and a set of gaskets for the cylinder head. My kit (surprisingly) didn't come with instructions, but it's pretty easy to install once you understand how it all fits together. The old piston and cylinder were actually in pretty good condition, just needed a new piston seal. Anyway, I went ahead and installed a new piston and cylinder. When I turned the compressor on, it was noticeably quieter and built up pressure quickly and steadily up to 230psi when the pressure switch shut it off. It took about 4-5 minutes to cutoff where before it worked for 15 minutes and couldn't go past 150psi. This kit breathed new life into old compressors and mine worked like new. Excellent WFM.
