Review on Synology Bay DiskStation DS220 Diskless by Matt Hamilton

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Solid performance if you upgrade the RAM.

Great NAS I used to replace my Windows 10 workstation for backup, plex and video surveillance tasks. Installation was quick, but I did my homework ahead of time and googled the instructions for the tasks I needed to do. The setup wizard only walks you through the basic settings of the device and doesn't even touch on most of the features that make this device as powerful as it is. Make a list of things you want your NAS to do, look to UTubes for a good guide and you won't be disappointed. One thing I noticed is that this device only comes with 4GB of RAM. This is also sufficient for "simple" use. You should at least upgrade to the maximum "supported" RAM of 8GB to do anything with video surveillance or virtual machines. You can upgrade this block to 20GB with unsupported modules. However, note that this is "unsupported" and Synology cannot help you with any issues while such modules are installed. I've been using this 920+ with 4gg base for about 2 weeks. Performance was good for basic file sharing and standalone backups. Using a Plex server caused a slight delay when other operations were also running. I then upgraded my device to an additional 4GB, for a total of 8GB (max supported by Synology Technical Support). Plex was much happier with this configuration and I was able to stream regardless of ongoing backup tasks. That's when I threw in the wrench and tried to create virtual machines as well. Depending on the operating system used, Windows in particular will not be satisfied with less than 4 GB allocated to a VM. That being said, with a max of 8GB I could only install one VM on the NAS and even then I went back to thread stuttering etc. To solve my problem I went beyond the supported specs and upgraded my 920+ to only 20GB at Using a 16GB dimmer. Let me tell you this thing does whatever I need it to do right now. I may need to upgrade to a more powerful device processor, but for what this device is intended for, it did 100%. Just remember to upgrade the memory for what you want to do.
