Review on Zip Hinge Downspout Extension Universal by John Warren

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Best solution I found

Best solution I found for gutter extension. These two-piece hinges were easy to install. Be sure to watch the video on their website as the written instructions are not very clear. The video says it all! The first gutter took me 30 minutes as I was very careful with the installation and assembly. After that, the next five downpipes each took about five minutes. An aluminum gutter is recommended for extensions, but I've used a vinyl gutter and it worked well, the included zip screws went through easily. I cut the vinyl extensions with a hacksaw and miter box at the 45 degree angle required for assembly. NOTE: Make sure you cut 45 on the right side! I didn't pay much attention to it and almost cut one left to right instead of top to bottom. Another reviewer mentioned putting a bolt in the hinge holes after assembly and I agree which is why I did that. The hinges work without a screw, but since they're a bit flimsy, a long screw going through the holes really helps stabilize the hinge. 6 feet, go up where the drain pipe curves into a gully. So I used two different methods instead. Four of the six downpipes are flush with the house. To do this I used a long length of 20 gauge 316 stainless steel wire threaded between the drain pipe and the house. I bent the ends into a U shape and just connected the ends around the extension to hold it. It doesn't have to be tight, just tight enough not to come loose in high winds. The other two gutters are not adjacent to the house but protrude a few inches. For this I used a long piece of Velcro with one turn, I simply tied the extension to the downpipe. (A wrap doesn't stick; it has hooks on one side and loops on the other, so you can wrap it around yourself no matter the length. Also great for wrapping cords and wires.) I'd give the zipper hinge 5 stars if it was stronger. And if only he had a good method for attaching extensions that are too long to use the included butterfly mount.
