One problem I had with using the 5/16" hole was that you can't dry insert all of the dowels if you place the dowels closer together than the width of the Template place the dowels to drill the docking holes as the other dowels go into the bracket. On a narrow piece, you can only use one dowel at a time to drill the docking hole. This is only a problem for material narrower than the width of the fixture. Haven't tried true precision work yet, but holding while drilling can be problematic.
