Review on ASUS VP229HE: The Ultimate 21.5" HD Monitor with Adaptive Sync, Frameless Design, and Blue Light Filter by Sammy Basheem

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good price, not ideal

[This is a review of the VP229Q, a 75Hz IPS model. There is also another model with a TN panel on the same Revain list.] Works well, no dead pixels. I really like the physical design, although the stand wobbles a bit, so I folded some decks of cards at an angle to keep it from moving. The built-in speakers are of pretty poor quality, but I had no intention of using them anyway. If you're just trying to watch a YouTube video or something like that, they're fine. The backlighting is a bit uneven (slightly dimmer in the top middle), but that doesn't really bother us. You can see it in the picture I took, but keep in mind that the center doesn't look much brighter in real life. On a black background you can see some "IPS glow" where the corners look lighter than they should. . And if you sit close to the monitor and look around the edges, then a "shadow effect" is created by the gap between the backlight and the panel. From what I've read online, both are common even on more expensive IPS monitors and not very noticeable in day-to-day use. 75Hz is noticeably smoother than 60Hz and G-SYNC appears to be working as advertised. There is an interesting feature built into the monitor that allows you to view the FPS graph to ensure it is working properly. I don't actually have the equipment/knowledge to measure color accuracy and pixel response time, but both seem pretty good. I found the different display modes a bit confusing, as some settings (saturation, color temperature, etc.) are only available in certain modes. There's an "sRGB" option which you think is the most accurate, but if you go for it you can't adjust the brightness and as far as I know it's not factory calibrated or anything. In general I am very satisfied. with him but not blown away. But for the price, it's hard to complain.
