My 2005 Windows XP Compaq Presario M2000 laptop was slow and annoying with its 40 GB (IDE/ATA) 5400 rpm hard drive constantly min. Even with a 1 .5GHz Intel Celeron processor and 500MB RAM on XP it felt almost unusable, even with antivirus disabled, system restore disabled and insanely fast wireless internet connection. But instead of giving up on Compaq, I installed a 32GB KingSpec SSD and the results after a few days were AMAZING. I first cloned a Windows XP hard drive to an SSD using the Apricorn Clone Kit, which comes with clone software (PC and Mac) and a very nice external drive enclosure. The cloning process took about 15 minutes via USB 2.0. I then inserted the KingSpec SSD into the Compaq and booted up with no issues. But then I noticed that right-clicking on the trackpad wasn't working and I was having trouble loading, stuck at the "Compaq" greeting. So cloning HDD to SSD after disabling system restore and doing the second clone went much faster and everything works COMPLETELY wrong. For best results, I recommend disabling System Restore in Windows XP, which will erase any previous XP versions indexed on your hard drive, although I'm not sure if this was the original problem. Anyway, Apricorn cloned my NTFS XP file format to the KingSpec SSD and so far I like the performance improvement. Instead of charging in a minute, it charges in about 30 seconds. Internet Explorer and Firefox open in seconds instead of getting bogged down in that hourglass, and browsing the web is now as easy as a 2012 computer. Using the Uninstall Software feature in the XP Control Panel took a long time to uninstall the to fill program list, but now it takes less than 30 seconds. Now TurboTax install and boot should be twice as fast, and no more hard drive constantly working to death, just quieter, faster operation. I don't know how it works with antivirus programs running in the background as Compaq was so slow with them that I disabled or uninstalled them and now just run regular scans. I also disabled system restore as before. All in all, for $50 on a lightweight old PC, it was totally worth it. I really like it and highly recommend both this KingSpec SSD and the Apricorn Clone Kit. Also, with Apricorn installed and this SSD, you can create a clone of your old hard drive in the included internal enclosure. XP won't boot from an external USB drive, but you can keep your old cloned hard drive as a non-bootable backup.
