I figured I could save about $100 by buying these instead of the Empires for commuting. Giro claims the only difference is the outsole, while the Empires are carbon fiber, they are plastic. Accordingly, the only real difference I've noticed is that the outsole isn't as stiff as the Empire. It's something you might notice when you jump out of the saddle to tackle a hill, but the commute to work isn't a race. Same great comfort sole and upper shape as the Empires. I could wear them all day as everyday shoes. Nice touches: the boots are deepened enough so they don't rattle when you walk. And there's a good elastic band to keep the laces in place so they don't get caught in the chain.
