Easily the best telephoto lens I've ever used

This lens is incredibly good. You can look at the reviews which will tell you it's good, but when you buy it you'll be amazed at the quality. This lens isn't sharp, but the detail is amazing. You can literally count the feathers on a hummingbird! I've used Canon L lenses with various 1D cameras, but when I sent my first shots with this lens to friends, everyone said how amazing the images were. I don't think Canon has a lens this good at a price close to its price. If you can afford it and need a lens with that range, buy it. Another benefit is stabilization. It usually takes me a bit of practice to get used to the lens and learn how to minimize errors. There is always a learning phase where you make stupid mistakes. That's what happened with this lens. The second time I photographed it with the E-M1, I took some shots of a pygmy owl in its burrow. After I finished taking pictures, I found that I had taken pictures with a shutter speed of 1/13 of a second. I was completely frustrated as this lens is equivalent to 600mm. Shooting up with no support, I figured there couldn't be any serious shocks. But when I looked at the pictures, to my surprise, they were clear. At 1/13 second. Do you mean that seriously? Of course, a faster shutter speed would be preferable, but being able to shoot at these speeds and get crisp images is a huge plus. As a final observation, even though I have 1.4TC, I found that images are better when I skip tc. and just cut. With TC the images are still good but some detail is lost. YMMV.

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Unbelievable price
