Review on Extech SD800 Humidity Temperature Datalogger by Larry Breeze

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Misleading product description: Not battery operated

Please note that this product is not battery operated. 6 AAA batteries are included only to prevent the date and time from being reset when you unplug the device. In order to take measurements and log data, the device *must* be connected to a wall. If you don't need to be mobile, this device might be for you. I am rating this product two stars mainly because I think the product is misleading. While it doesn't specifically state that the device is battery only, I don't know of any other device that uses a full pack of 6xAAA 9V batteries to power the real time clock. It is also very typical for CO2/Temperature/Humidity monitors and data loggers of this size to be battery or AC powered. The answer I got from tech support was that the documentation clearly stated that the batteries only power the clock. While it's technically correct, it's only listed on the last page of the user manual in fine print in a subsection detailing the power supply required. I would argue that consumer due diligence should not involve reading the entire owner's manual to the last page. Also, the fact that the battery limit is mentioned at all shows that the company understands that this is out of character. Aside from the battery issue, the device has mediocre build quality and the buttons feel cheap and unresponsive. Each key press is accompanied by a very loud and high-pitched chirp, making it extremely annoying to use in quiet areas. I can't say anything about the quality of the data generated by the device because I will be returning this device and ordering the device from another manufacturer.
