Review on Superwinch 1331200 UT3000 Roller Fairlead by Paul Wilson

Good for the money but not a superstar

I have just received my Superwinch UT3000. While I didn't expect this winch to be bulletproof as priced, I do expect it to be useful. After unpacking the winch and hooking it up to a 12 volt battery, I tested it prior to installation. Nothing is more frustrating than completing the installation only to find your project has failed and then coming back to see if you did something or if it was broken to begin with. I'm happy to say that everything worked as it should. I then disassembled the relay box to install the wireless controller in parallel with the included wired controller. This is the best way, if your remote control runs out of batteries you can still use the included wired remote control. This relay box is not waterproof and will not be very waterproof if you mount this winch low on your quad or side by side. Note that submerging this winch will flood the relay. I'd say it's ok for rain and splashes but no more. You can improve it by covering the edges and wires with some sort of RTV or silicone, but that wasn't necessary for me. The only complaint I have out of the box is that the spool release button is plastic. After a few uses, the small brass bush pulls the force required for actuation out of the plastic. With it, you can get a different handle made of a more durable material. In general, the winch seems good for the money, compatible with a wireless controller, does not creak or make extraneous noises during operation.

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • There are more interesting options.
