Install the TP-Link utility at your own risk.

I would give this product 4/5 if there weren't major compatibility issues between TP-Link Utility and Windows 7 and 8. The device itself works as advertised. The increase in acceptance is impressive. However, the device only works well with drivers. If you want to get additional features, such as creating an access point, you need to install the TP-Link utility. This gives you more control over the device and the ability to create hotspots. After using the adapter with only the drivers installed (2.5 months), I decided to try the utility. Worked great for 1 week. After that I got a blue screen of death on my Win 8 machine... "Bad_Pool_Header". The frequency of my random shutdowns starts to increase with each day of use to the point where my laptop barely restarts before shutting down. I thought my laptop... less than a year old... was going to die. I've done all sorts of upgrades and restores...no dice. The day was normal, then the errors started again. At that moment I pulled out my trusty old trusty laptop with Win 7. I installed the utility and everything was fine for several hours, then the same random shutdowns started. I removed the TP-Link utility and my system became stable again. I opened my laptop with Win 8, uninstalled the utility and stability was restored immediately. Unfortunately there is still a problem. Instead of minutes between random outages, the time has grown to hours. I have to erase the whole system and do a clean install. TP-Link Utility has major compatibility issues with Win 7 and 8 despite what the TP-Link website says. Yes, I ran compatibility mode. For some ridiculous reason I was prompted to run it in XP mode. This didn't work either. This is not an isolated case either. Just before the random blackouts started, I recommended the device to a friend. She has a Win 7 laptop. Her experience was identical to mine. No issues just with the drivers but after installing the utility it was a disaster. Again, I would give 4/5 if the utility didn't crash my laptops. As it stands, 1/5 is the best I can give.
