Works but could be much better

Installed on our 2017 Dodge Journey and I am disappointed with the installation. Installation wasn't difficult at all, but I had to make a spacer to keep it from falling apart. Dodge made the odd choice of placing the stereo at the bottom edge of the dash, making it impossible to simply install a secondary stereo. Metra did a good job of putting the new stereo system where it fits given its limitations. However, it leaves a lot to be desired. The new panel it inserts is difficult to install, and pressing the buttons too hard will cause it to pop out of place. I had to make a spacer that would fit where the pocket should have been which I removed to provide extra support just to make it somewhat usable. Since he is placing the new stereo where the HVAC controls are, they had to be moved. Instead of placing them somewhere within reach, they placed them under the new stereo. So not only do you lose a storage bag, but the new controls are inconveniently located under the stereo. The buttons are rubbery and cheap, and between their saved-screen controller replacement and cheap buttons, adjusting the temperature in our car is now much slower and more onerous. moved to a new cheap panel instead of putting the buttons where they were. Add to that her inability to color that stripe and now it looks awful because the silver line that was there is just black and not even the same anymore. And there's no reason they couldn't leave the buttons where they were since they'd already replaced the controller with one of their own. very difficult on stereo models that require a USB connection (like mine). However, it was very easy to cut a hole in the kit and install the stock connectors on it. I don't understand at all why Metra didn't bother to just leave a hole to store those inputs. The problem is that there is no competition - there is no alternative. It's this kit, or treat yourself to quality Dodge dashboard parts and a stereo. And if your new stereo doesn't have the feature you want, you're out of luck. And Metra has no incentive to improve it because the consumer has no choice.
