I already have an old school digital meat thermometer and analog readout. But I really like this one as it also has an optional wired remote sensor. It's very easy to use - you just flip the stainless steel sensor on the back of the device and it turns on. Similarly, simply plugging in a remote sensor will also turn it on. It will turn off automatically after 3 minutes, so to turn it on again using the remote sensor, you have to unplug and plug it back in. The remote sensing sensor is approximately 6 inches long and sits on the end of a 42 inch stainless steel coated wire. There is a magnet in the case that sticks to the oven door, but it's pretty weak and mine tended to slide on the front of the oven door. I will most likely be using this long term with my smoker running the sensor cable through the opening at the top where it can just sit on top so a weak magnet isn't really a problem for me, but be aware if you want to use the magnet's function. It uses a pair of standard CR2032 CMOS batteries that are already included in the case. It has alarm and temperature settings, but I haven't tested these features as I don't intend to use them. Overall I recommend this meat thermometer as it offers an instant read with the attached probe as well as an instant read with the included remote sensor probe.
