Save the old pump parts.

This truck is rarely used in my house. I lend it out when a family member needs it, I take out the trash etc. So imagine my feeling when I was really smiling after 4 years without a gas sensor when the fuel pump failed. That was until I ordered this pump. As I said, I drove 4 years without a fuel gauge just because pump replacement is PITA on this car. Don't like - you will receive the pump assembly and 1 gasket. I had to cut out the gasket and remove the small vent line adapter. on my old pump. I also had to use my old main washer as the new one was too tall to properly connect the pump adapter (the huge plastic nut on the tank). I tested the new pump first by putting it on top of the tank and my fuel gauge started working again. I put the pump in and hook everything up. I start the truck and the gauge does not rise above the low gas mark (1/16?). What? I thought maybe I rotated the pump assembly so the float was banging against the tank wall so I drop the tank again, loosen the nut, rotate the pump a little, put everything back in place. Before I turn the key, I notice that the fuel tank reads about 1/8 tank (about the right amount of fuel). I turn the key and the pointer falls to where the low gas light is on again. I turn the key off and it goes back to the fuel level. For $hits & Giggles I went and filled up the tank thinking it might fix the float problem. Same problem. key is off Full tank, key on. Low gas level. So instead of dropping a full tank this time, I cut a hole in the back of my truck to access the pump from the top (it's a club and a full size tool box sits above the cut so who cares) . I disconnected the gas line, connected the fuel hose, turned the key and drained 15 gallons from the tank. I checked the pressure gauge and still have the same problem with the gas gauge, the key has been removed. fuel level, ignition. Low gas level. I went to my favorite Dakota forum and asked about a fuel pump problem. What I noticed was a break in the ground wire. Guess what? It wasn't like that. So before making this post I asked for the pump to be replaced. Let's see if a new one solves the problem. They want me to send the old pump back, see what UPS says about sending that gas soaked part.
