With some LED lights it is difficult to tell the difference between brake and tail light functions. These are clear. As taillights, they're not very bright - about on par with standard incandescent taillights - but when you step on the brakes, they draw attention. I use them on a motorcycle trunk because the motorcycle partially obscures my van's normal taillights. Their slim profile and surface mount design are ideal for mounting to a bracket, most commonly made from aluminum brackets. It should be noted that they do not act as reflectors when switched off. I'd suggest having some sort of passive reflector when you're parked or in case your trailer's wiring fails. The red and white reflective tape available at auto parts stores is extremely effective and would be a good choice. As previously noted, the color coding of the wiring is a bit odd. However, it only took a few minutes to figure it out through trial and error. Please note that choosing the wrong one will not damage these lights, they simply will not light up. Once you locate the single ground (negative) wire, it's easy to identify the brake and taillight wires.
