Review on Microshift Advent Medium Cage 9-Speed Rear Derailleur - Black with Clutch by Joshua Romero

Great Switch

I really like this switch. When you take it out of the box, it's a real TANK, not a fragile and light object. If the cockroaches survive the atomic bomb or the asteroid apocalypse, they will ride bikes with these advent switches. The cage return spring is quite strong on its own, making the clutch feel less necessary. However, the ratchet handle adds even more rigidity. However, the equivalent shifter has long levers with plenty of travel, and the shifting effort feels quite comfortable. There are two areas of improvement I would recommend: 1) The cable stop on the derailleur is at an angle where the cable housing is STRAIGHT. How the seatstay matters. This is great for routing the cable in front of the switch, but routing the cable below the cable stop is often less than optimal. It's almost done in the largest sprocket next to the lower limit screw. But the cable pushes almost 45 degrees to the wheel and then another 45 degrees back to vertical when the derailleur is in the smaller sprocket next to the top limit screw. I suspect this is by design - the cable should be as straight as possible when it's under the most tension - but it still seems like they could tilt the cable stop slightly inwards, allowing the cable travel over most of it derailleur operating range is straighter. To prevent the cable from being pulled toward the exit end of the cable stop, I inserted a very short piece of brake noodle liner before pushing the cable through. This keeps a very small amount of lubricant, which ensures a clean sliding of the cable. 2) The clutch switch feels very good when engaging the clutch, but often doesn't do a good job when disengaging the clutch. When switched to the off position, it often does not fully latch into that position until the switch cage is moved. Much like the pawls of a ratchet, they must be properly aligned before the clutch can be disengaged. I don't know if this is a feature of my device and maybe my device isn't working properly, or they all work that way, or it's just the way it is. It doesn't really matter, but I think it's worth mentioning. Otherwise - great value for a derailleur that feels solid enough to last a million miles.
