Review on Tamron AF 17-35mm f/2.8-4.0 Di LD SP Aspherical (IF) Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens - Discontinued by Manufacturer - Canon Digital SLR Cameras by Stacy Jackson

Almost universal lens

I was on a tight budget to buy a lens (indoor/outdoor people and group shots and some landscape shots) and chose it based on reviews. This lens delivers clear images outdoors and in good light conditions (no flash). However, it leaves a lot to be desired for handheld photography of people in low light. I'm looking for a Canon 28mm f/1.8 USM to fill that gap (I'd like a Canon 50mm f/1.4, but on a 1.6x camera it's 80mm, which isn't very useful for me is). It creates soft corners in wide angles. I also had a lot of focus issues when using a UV filter with this lens. A good lens hood (the one that comes with the lens is useless) is essential to avoid flare. Updated 12/20/2007. I've since replaced that lens with a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 DC fixed aperture lens and the photos are amazingly sharp compared to that lens, especially in low light indoors. Center and corner sharp at f/2.8 even without stepping down. For about $150 more, it's definitely worth paying 17-50 f/2.8 over this crop lens (17-50 is a DC lens that causes vignetting in FF cameras).
