Review on Thule 881 Top Deck: Black Rooftop Kayak Carrier - Efficient Solution for Easy Transportation by Mike Wallace

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Suitable for passenger cars, can be difficult to load for high SUVs and vans.

I got this luggage rack after using THULE Hull a Port for 5 years. Taking the kayak and climbing onto the radiator to get to the hull was a bit of a struggle, and after one day pulling my back, pushing and straining to get to the trunk on my Xterra I thought that this build might be the best option for me if I'm just carrying a kayak since I can lift it from the back and use the SUV's roof as a lever. It works pretty well but I wasn't expecting that both rack kits have rubber that keeps the kayak from sliding forward when half loaded. When I tried to load it the rubber started and even started to curl due to friction so I ended up climbing up and half lifting it and sliding it into its final position. It's not bad if I lay down a towel and use the roof as a lever and push down, but it's still a bit harder than I'd like. After purchasing this carrier, I saw another brand's carrier with a similar design, but the rear set had small wheels and the front set had rubber to prevent slipping. I think this design would be perfect for me. This isn't a problem if you have a smaller car or SUV. So if you're buying for this type of vehicle, it's definitely 5 stars. Overall another good product from THULE.
