We purchased a horse that was a bit mouth sour after the previous owner wrenched on his face quite a bit in the jumper stadium. As a result, he tried consistently to evade contact for fear of the resultant pain, to the point where we rode him basically with a neckstrap and did not touch the reins or bit. We found this rubber bit and just started riding him in it - it is so incredibly gentle that he seems more relaxed in it. Not sure if we can use it in competition,so we have a rubber coated snaffle to progress to before we show him again. He seems to like the bit and is definitely more open to accepting contact in it. Not sure if this bit would be suitable for backing a horse, as it is quite pliable and could conceivalby be bitten in half if a horse worried it constantly. We have another horse we are currently backing, with no previous bad experiences, and are using a double jointed french link loose ring snaffle, and she seems to be very happy in it. Hope that helps.good luck with your horse.
