The adjustable flow rate is great. Sponge Pre-Filter All

If you're going to use this to pump water into a canister filter, keep these two things in mind. On the positive side, you can reduce the flow rate with a valve. This can reduce leakage that occurs when using canister filters (too much pressure forces water out). On the other hand, a filter sponge that "protects" the motor from debris will actually filter out so much dead plant matter and other organic matter from my 50 gallon pond that my $100 canister filter can't filter much! I opened the lid and there wasn't much to erase. However, once I managed to remove the cap (which can be a bit tricky) this filter on the pump was loaded with manure, dead algae, dead plants, etc. I noticed that the water flow rate was returning to my pond because the filter was reduced and that was the reason. If you want your external pump to retain debris, consider removing the filter sponge in that pump. Oh when I removed the lid a lot of the dirt that got into the filter went back into the pond. That's why I like external filters. But the thing works great and you can adjust the flow rate, which is important.
