I am a qualified electrician. It reads right. Illuminates only when the tip is directly on a live wire or object. It seems to do a good job of ignoring the trace induced on one wire by the parallel wire in the wiring rat's nest. I really like how I can just take it out of my pocket, tap anywhere on it to light it up and show it's working, and then test the circuit without fiddling with the button each time. He was with me for about seven months without a break. batteries die. It doesn't look like it was always "on" and drained the batteries significantly. It shut itself off completely for two weeks after sitting in my side pocket and climbing attics for a week or two. I must have leaned heavily on my side and pressed him against several beams. This tick tracer only has a 1/8" plastic body so it eventually broke. The only thing it fails to do is that it will insert and read the hot slot of a standard 125V outlet, but won't reach far enough to 208V or 277V 30-50 amp outlets - Devices to read. Still works after click. But I decided to write an afterword out of sheer luck, being too crude with such sensitive equipment. If you're a technician whose job isn't too rough with your tools, this is a great little gadget. My favorite of all I've tried for convenience and accuracy. I just wish it was a little more boring.
