Not so good at the moment - tester

I am a licensed electrician with over 35 years experience. I used to use the exact same devices from Snap-On, but I believe SnapOn just put their logo on them as they were identical. I have purchased several of these Santronics devices from Revain and have found that they are either the same as the old SnapOn devices which worked unrealistically or were completely useless. Of the last few Santronics I bought, about 50% worked great and the rest was crap. New batteries or not, bad batteries just

Best Visual NC Voltage Detector

Everyone knows how annoying NCVTs can be. The cheap ones work but are unreliable and sometimes stop working. I have taken several NFPA courses and the electrical instructor recommended this tester to me as it is the only one that is OSHA approved. I work as a mechanic in a hospital, so we often test and repair electrical equipment and circuits. I've had a few Kleins over the years and a great Fluke tester. Kleins are good, but they seem to have reliability issues over the long term. My Fluke is

Absolutely the best tester for service work.

When I was a beginner I saw my apprentice using them and was amazed not only by how accurate they were but also that they didn't require a button or sound. Back then I was using the squeaky cricket type and it quickly became apparent how sensitive my tester was and how much of a problem it was. The audio isn't appropriate for helpdesk calls due to noise pollution, and my tester was overly sensitive, picking up voltage within 6 inches of the cord. When inspecting a junction box or even an…

  • Best in its niche

This is one of those rare pieces of equipment that's built for the job and perfect for the job. Don't be fooled by the plain looks! This tool is simply the best: always-on, silent, photosensitive to perfection, allowing you to accurately diagnose multi-circuit wiring. No hassle with buttons, power switches and other things. Not only that, it has a built in battery check feature that you probably won't even notice! (When it's tapped it has a quick flash of light which gives you a quick way to…

Super convenient, reliable, capacious battery. But not durable!

I am a qualified electrician. It reads right. Illuminates only when the tip is directly on a live wire or object. It seems to do a good job of ignoring the trace induced on one wire by the parallel wire in the wiring rat's nest. I really like how I can just take it out of my pocket, tap anywhere on it to light it up and show it's working, and then test the circuit without fiddling with the button each time. He was with me for about seven months without a break. batteries die. It doesn't look…

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • The list will be long.
