Doesn't offer enough power for a super drive, but overall works

When I bought my 2018 MacBook Pro I knew I would have a limited number of ports, but I figured there wouldn't be any big difference since we use all web and cloud materials. I am very wrong as sometimes an IT pro needs to connect directly to other devices that are not USB-C compatible. Sometimes you need to connect to an RJ45 cable, sometimes you need to read an SD card, and you still need access to USB-A devices, so I went with a hub with all those ports. I'd say this hub works pretty well, but it doesn't work on the USB 3.0 side. At least you can use USB sticks and drives, but the ports don't deliver enough power for a super drive that needs 8W, which is a bit disappointing for a "Pro" product. The LAN ports detect somewhat fluctuating connection speeds, if you don't connect the cable quickly and directly the first time, I've gotten a 10T connection several times instead of 1000T with the exact same cable, I can live with that, but still. strange, also the LAN port doesn't click that much whether it's properly plugged in or not. The HDMI output works, although I don't have an HD or 4K monitor to test with, but my modest HDMI monitor did the trick. Overall this product works, but I wish it had enough USB 3 power to run a super drive.

Pros
  • Sleek design
Cons
  • Not everything fits
