Review on πŸ”§ Fix-All Thread Repair Kit (1208-018) - Complete Thread Restoration Solution by Justin Sherman

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Not quite a complete set

Broken 1/4 inch bolt in aluminum lawnmower engine block. (Whoever last worked on the engine didn't use anti-seize compound on the bolt threads, so the steel bolt caught the threads in the aluminum block, causing it to lock up.) For those reading this and not aware, Up in the final equipment, threaded inserts are used with the aluminum engine block, allowing steel bolts to be used and removed without the use of anti-seize compound (PermaTex). Sold by Thread Kits under the Perma-Coil brand name, this insert kit does the job just as well as the Heli-Coil branded inserts, just at a MUCH lower price. The user instructions are sufficient but do not address the purpose of the yellow plastic grille. (Instructions refer to using the "BLUE prewinder" but there is nothing blue in the box.) If the required drill were included this kit would be perfect, "everything you need to get the job done ." In their defense, the instructions state what size drill bit to use (11/64" for a 1/4" bit). I didn't use the yellow grid or the blue dummy pre-wrap but the insert installed easily and successfully, thank you. As a side note, I have mechanic friends who shy away from threaded inserts because they are "unlucky" that they come out of the hole when removing the bolts later. When I was in the Air Force we used screw inserts rigorously and we never had a problem with them turning out, so I took that with a grain of salt. Once installed, remove the insert stock as instructed and you should never have a problem with reverse. And no, I didn't use Loc-tite on the insole. When the screw is inserted, the force of the torque causes the Insert to grab the aluminum threads and prevent it from moving.

Pros
  • High marks for grip and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other alternatives
