Huge time saver compared to a flatbed scanner but with some issues

I bought this scanner after spending countless hours scanning stacks of old household documents with a Canon flatbed scanner. The fact that both sides of a document can be scanned at the same time and blank pages (e.g. sheets with text or images on only one side) automatically ejected is great. All in all, this is an everyday document archiving experience. However, if you have high-quality images or small print (especially in pencil), a flatbed scanner is a better fit, as it has at least twice the resolution and better color reproduction (but they're slow). Please note that fast scanning at 40 ppm is only available in simplex mode with low resolution (200 dpi). still much, much faster than a tablet. However, this was not without problems when working with the R40 scanner. First, the instructions that came with it didn't clearly state how to remove all the protective elements. The scanner has been fitted with regular tape and foam to keep vital parts secure. What caught my eye, however, was the orange plastic insert in the feedport. Didn't realize it had to be removed by opening the scanner (easy button access job so don't worry). But with that orange guard, he wouldn't recognize any of the documents I put inside. The manual has a crappy black and white diagram with a tiny arrow pointing to this protector, but it doesn't specifically say "remove the molded orange plastic insert" or anything. So I spent 30 minutes trying to figure out if this scanner is broken or not. However, this is a minor annoyance and not the reason I'm deducting 1 star. This thing loses a star because the automatic page rotation feature just doesn't work properly. For those who don't know, Canon advertises that the software that comes with the scanner detects flipped pages (by looking at the text) and rotates them so they are right side up. This is very useful when you are scanning large batches of documents quickly and don't want to collate each batch to ensure all sheets are facing the same direction. The problem I found was that the auto rotate feature only worked properly about half the time. I did a test and flipped the whole pack and it fixed about half the leaves. So if you have a random sheet or two that needs to be rotated you might be in luck, but if you have a lot of them you still have to manually edit the .PDF to fix them. When you spend over $300 on a scanner, you are essentially paying not only for the smooth operation of the hardware, but also for the software. In this case, the software was good but didn't quite live up to the advertising. It was great in other areas (one-touch scanning, saving to PDF, the overall quality of automatic image adjustment, quick and manual adjustment of settings, etc., everything worked perfectly). But for me it's just too annoying to have to check for rotated pages in advance of every batch of documents I scan. So I'm deducting a star for him. Also note that at the time of writing this review (1/4/2020) Canon is selling the R40 scanner for $247 with free shipping on its website as opposed to the $320 Revain. Now, $247 would be a very good price for it, and if I paid that, the balance of price and performance would be perfect for a 5-star rating. Conclusion: The imageFormula R40 scanner is an excellent sheet feed scanner. for home or small offices. It's fast (at 200 dpi), scans both sides of the paper, and the included software generally does a good job. Just don't expect 100% success with some post-processing software features like automatic page rotation. Be sure to remove the orange side feed plug from the input side before using the device or you will be scratching your head for 30 minutes.
