Review on Pound O Dice by Chessex: Your Ultimate Solution for Ample Dice Supply by Girish Underwood

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Quality control issues and the associated d6 pips (which nobody wants) keep this set from being a great dice set.

Here is some information I would think is valuable before purchasing: First, this is the second factory matrix - get your expectations right. That means a lot of things, but I understand that these are chessex dice that failed QC and/or are redundant: QC deficiencies include: The damage obviously shouldn't be significant or take up much of the set since it is sold retail. I chose the Chessex Pound-O-Dice because it looked more interesting (smoky, speckled) than the competition) and also because Chessex dice generally weigh more (harder) and provide a better throwing experience. I understand that Game Science is known for providing a statistically "more accurate game," but that my dice aren't trying to slice and kill me outweighs my obsessive-compulsive disorder for mathematically accurate dice. If I needed accuracy, I would buy Vegas Casino Dice! I received: 0 full color sets (7-DIE STANDARD) beyond the factory warranty 1 set in a yellow envelope. I got a total of 107 dice, of which 13.% were d6 pips and 12% were damaged (unusable even for factory seconds). So a total of 25% of the cubes are unusable for me. I made a spreadsheet for this that you can copy and paste into an Excel or Google spreadsheet to view. Brand Color D4 D6 D8 D10 D10% D12 D20 TOTALCHESSEX RED MARBLED/SPECKLED 0 1 0 0 2 1 3 2 0 1 6CHESSEX GREEN PLAIN 0 1 0 2 3 0 1 7CHESSEX YELLOW PLAINEX 1 1 0 3 0 0 2 7CHESSEX GRAY PLAIN 0 2 0 6 0 0 3 11CHESSEX PIPS 0 13 0 0 0 0 0 13CHESSEX AREA 2 3 3 3 1 14CHESSEX DAMAGED 5 1 2 1 1 0 3 1 1 1 1 1 1 7 TOTAL 107 Overall I hesitate to buy this product again if I can't use 25% of my dice. It also turns out that factory seconds actually mean factory seconds. The quality control of these factory seconds is not high, there are many cubes with obvious cosmetic problems. Even with the dice I didn't mark as damaged, there were still some with minor issues like number drawing errors, slightly misaligned numbers, etc. I may have received an odd batch that isn't representative of the larger pool. But I'll let you decide So why 4 stars and not 3 stars? The limited edition 1st factory dice that come with it are beautiful. I received a purple/pink speckled black ink stamp and the quality is way better than the rest of the dice. The finish is excellent, there do not seem to be any cosmetic defects (even minor ones), the color is clear, it does not bleed. Both Easy Roller and Wiz Dice can guarantee you complete sets with the best quality control, but they just don't have the variety or interesting patterns that Chessex offers. Although some reviewers have mentioned that all dice look equally ugly, I haven't found that to be the case. Most of the cubes were interesting or beautiful, and only a few I would describe as "ugly". Hope this helps you decide!
