Repair books do not state that replacing the cover gasket on EcoTec 2.2s requires removing the motor mount. The bracket goes through a small hole at the bottom of the gasket (it's actually the top of the gasket, but the gasket is upside down in the picture). I ended up cutting off that part of the gasket (because it didn't have any sealing properties I figured it didn't need to be sealed) and I never had to remove an engine mount. So far, so good. It appears to be just as good as the original and hasn't leaked in months. I had to replace the original gasket because when I removed the engine cover I didn't realize the gasket was reusable and ended up destroying the original when I removed the cover.
