Maybe not for the street?

I bought these in January 2014 to fit hinges on my large metal gates. They fit great and I was very happy with them - NOW (May 2015) they are very cracked and I'm back here looking for another brand/type. They can work great under the hood/in the car - maybe they get UV/UV light? I can still get them - they work fine for a while and I don't want things (rain/dirt) getting into the folding hardware - the hardware was put right in the sky so I feel the need to like them - and then protect them. - Possibly put a small metal cap/cup over the fittings and secure with wire.
