This shampoo is very good at removing common dirt and leaving the carpet looking clean. We have used it successfully to remove small grass stains, dog accidents and blood stains from a bloody nose. I thought I read somewhere that shampoo crystals attach to dirt on carpet and get removed with every vacuum, and if so that might be one of the reasons it got darker. I've only used it on my light colored carpet so I can't say enough about how well it works on upholstered furniture.
