Another typical Chinese POS. This is not real pipe or real pipe thread. The potholder is crooked, oh yeah, I got my hands on the potholder, SWEET! Do yourself a favor, go to your hometown hardware store and buy black pipe fittings, blue Loctite, and a can of spray paint. Maybe a few bucks more than this POS, but at least you'll be proud of it. I'm sure a hardware specialist will help you assemble it if you can't. If you are in a hurry, it will bite you every time.
