Good starter at a good price. In a direct physical comparison to a factory BMW unit I would say it's just as well made. The casting was smooth and precise. The fit into the starter hole on the bell housing was tight and precise. Electrical connectors went straight into the money. Most importantly, this unit is 100W more powerful than the OEM unit! Since my factory BMW starter failed at 77,000 miles (!) I'm not sure BMW units are anything special. In fact, after disassembling my OEM unit that spoiled its life in a car that has always sat in the garage and has been a 'baby' since the new one was introduced, I would say that the OEM unit several has disadvantages such as poorly selected lubrication and internal tolerances that are too tight are the reason for my "failing". Literally smeared grease on the anchor and bendix block was all that was wrong! In any case, the country of origin of my exchange device (TYC) was Japan. Kind regards. Looks like Hitachi. IMHO the Japanese are just as competent, maybe even more competent than the Germans when it comes to building electric motors. IMPORTANT NOTE: You cannot return this starter as a core if after a few years it fails and you need to replace it again and when you decide to use the BMW device next time. So I suggest that you save your "first" BMW device in case you ever use a BMW starter in the future. A core usually costs about fifty dollars, so your "OEM" BMW starter that you're replacing with this TYC unit is sitting on a shelf somewhere. In case you had a bad experience with that TYC device and next time you decide to OEM, you have a kernel. Personally, however, I am very happy with this unit and am quite picky about the maintenance of my machine. It took me a little over two hours to replace the block. Not difficult, but you need the right tools and a reasonable level of competence.
