Review on πŸ”’ Master Lock Stainless Steel Barbell Receiver Lock - 5/8 in. Fit (1469DAT) by Pat Haberman

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Works as well as any hitch lock but will hold up through the winter

I bought this lock last spring to fit an aluminum hitch on my 2017 Toyota Tacoma. I like to leave it on to protect the bumper from damage in parking lots. This will eventually lead to corrosion, but this is not the fault of the product. Anytime dissimilar metals (stainless steel, aluminium, mild steel) come into contact in a salty environment, corrosion/rusting etc will occur so you need to be aware of what you are entering. If you have a Toyota, the standard length receiver lock will not work. fit. You need an extended stem like this one. This limits the stainless steel receiver locking options available. This is the cheapest I've found. I made the mistake of leaving my last winter when we had an unusual amount of snow. When I went to remove it this spring, the key was in, but the lock itself was locked. I tried WD-40 and some penetrating oils but ended up breaking both keys in the lock. I really don't blame the lock as you can't expect a $15 lock to last all season when exposed to road salt etc. I had to open it regularly or just take it off for the winter. If someone is dealing with a confiscated one, it can easily be broken up with a piece of metal pipe. I used a jack handle. Simply tear off the rubber sleeve, then slide the tube over the lock barrel, perpendicular to the receiver shaft. I rocked it back and forth 3 times and it fell off. Other reviewers have mentioned using an angle grinder but I don't think it's necessary and you risk damaging your receiver if you don't know how to use it. I don't actually consider this a security or design flaw. Any receiver lock can be cracked by anyone. It's designed to stop an accidental or opportunistic thief, not someone with a plan. This person will steal your lead anyway. I don't blame the lock for sticking either. I'm actually ordering another one to replace the one I had to snap off as it's cheaper than the other options and fits my Tacoma.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
