Review on ๐Ÿงญ Ultimate Outdoor Navigation: Garmin GPSMAP 76 Waterproof Handheld GPS (Discontinued Model) by Robert Buenconsejo

Revainrating 5 out of 5

ideal for jet skis/small boats; Buy road maps elsewhere

We use this GPS on our SeaDoo GTX and are very happy with its performance on the water. We use the standard maps that come with the device. This product works well but the standard maps are not detailed and major roads are missing and often mislabeled. Using this product for street navigation would be terrible. However, water navigation is slightly better. Several buoys and markers are correct and in the expected locations on the chart. The most useful features are: 1) an auto-generated breadcrumb path, and 2) a backlit LCD screen, which helped a lot on a recent trip (Fr Judith, RI to Block Island, RI) where we got to. caught in the sea at dusk. This GPS allowed us to follow a previously marked route and although we were in the sea and couldn't see very far we just followed the GPS and got home safely. It's also easy to mark landmarks, which are important for finding your way back to a boat ramp in an unfamiliar location! The Element is fully waterproof and took about 20 minutes for beginners (like us!) to read. manual and familiarize yourself with the main functions. It's easy to mark waypoints and conveniently shows the speed, time and direction we're moving. The element also clearly displays latitude and longitude. So if we had engine problems on the water, we could certainly get our position radio-assisted with GPS and be fairly easy to find. I wish the screen was a little clearer. We often have to stop the jet ski to look at that GPS to get a sense of where we are and where we're going, but that comes at a small price for how we think on the water.
