Great backup GPS, suitable for sports and portable GPS units

Purchased as a backup for a boat. Works well, sometimes seems to be off by more than 100ft even when there are 5 or more satellites. Good battery life, simple menu navigation. The manufacturer should provide a GPS USB port, not just serial, which is not common these days, especially on laptops. After connecting to a PC and installing the software, it is easy to save and download maps and routes.

Pros
  • Slim design
Cons
  • Interchangeable

Needs more info in GPS, Finder & Accessories

You must purchase the original maps ($100+) to make this item worthwhile. I need a GPS for boating, but basemaps are still in their infancy ie. no bays, rivers, shoreline details or lakes. Although very accurate and easy to use, it has a nice big screen and good reception. If you need GPS now, this device represents excellent value for money. I paid $199 a month ago and now it's $169 but that's my problem.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Almost never

Very good for pleasure boat navigation

This unit does a lot and does what I was looking for when I got the GPS: it reports location, speed, max speed, average speed, heading etc. I swim and I love it, too track where I am, how far I've traveled, how fast, etc. The device's only weakness is that its user interface isn't particularly user-friendly (it comes with a very long user manual). Overall, however, I am very satisfied with my purchase.

Garmin GPS 76 in Sport & Handheld GPS

This is a replacement for my old Garmin card, bought when the tech was fairly new but was stolen from me. It has a large map page, great for my old eyes. I've used my old map in the Mojave Desert on cloudy days, followed my breadcrumb trail and never got lost. Did some geocaching too - fun! An excellent complement to state topographic maps and very useful for RV trips in the USA. I haven't used all the new technologies in it yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

Not Mac compatible, waypoints hard to create

I haven't seen it explicitly anywhere, so here it is: This thing isn't Mac compatible. With a serial to USB converter and some free software (Garmin software won't help) you can get GPS data on Windows, but good luck if you're using a Mac. Also, it is very difficult to create new waypoints. on the water. Because if you try to create a waypoint too close to a known feature (e.g. a highway, an intersection or WATERMEDA) the GPS will try to use the center of the feature (or something similar). So…

Poor customer service

The first unit delivered did not work. The map was not displayed correctly. If you try to use the menu, it will be blocked. After speaking to a tech and doing a basic reload, the map partially recovered but still locked when you tried to use the side or menu button. The captain confirmed the problem and said it needs to be returned. I asked if they would give me a repaired device or a new device in return. He said since I bought it new I would get a new replacement. I told him I would use UPS…

Very useful and versatile

I bought the GPSMap 76 because of its quad antenna. Reviews of other GPS receivers often complained that the satellite signal was lost in trees or under heavy cloud cover. I haven't lost the signal on the street yet. Normally it can receive signal even in my wooden house. Initially, I needed an odometer for hiking, but I settled on the mapping option. I have used the GPSMap 76 for hiking, driving and cycling. It's not optimized for any of those uses, but as a general-purpose device it's fine…

ideal for jet skis/small boats; Buy road maps elsewhere

We use this GPS on our SeaDoo GTX and are very happy with its performance on the water. We use the standard maps that come with the device. This product works well but the standard maps are not detailed and major roads are missing and often mislabeled. Using this product for street navigation would be terrible. However, water navigation is slightly better. Several buoys and markers are correct and in the expected locations on the chart. The most useful features are: 1) an auto-generated…
