So you can open it over the bowl and clean it without losing the contents. But this design also makes the top of the gutter a bit more difficult to clean than if you could reach both ends to remove stuck things. This wasn't a problem for me as I spilled water as soon as I was done with it. pain when cleaning. The small size is great because I can keep it on my countertop where it's easy to reach and use when I need it. The other lid and blades, which I don't use that often, fit easily in a storage bag and are conveniently stowed in a small cabinet above the microwave where most things don't fit. The container is big enough to make small batches of sauces and other things you don't want to throw down the chute. For a larger batch, I can still use the old HB processor.
