I read a bad review that said they penetrate terribly (oh no!), they cost four times as much but sometimes you have to do what you can must do to get them to get the job done. Anyway, the advice is the same as it has been for the past 30 years, so I'm not sure what this guy has, but I have tips that are at a 45 degree angle one way and at a 45 degree angle are cut in the opposite direction on the other leg and they work like they always do, so I just throw a weird ball. I've compared the new ones to samples of the staples I've collected over the last 30 years and they are do the same and the same job. What could happen is that his vision is for T-50 #508 (1/2 inch) which have a flat tip that also does not penetrate some surfaces. l but I believe these longer stays are for softer surfaces where grip length is more important than hard surface penetration. -50 will give you diagonal (45 degree) spikes. Buy 1/2" #508 and up to get flat chisel tips.
