Good Inserts = Stronger than Brass

I'm use the #1 size /4" for screw-on guitar necks. They screw into an 11/32" hole. It's a lot cheaper here than in big stores or master craftsmen. Tip: Threaded inserts can hardly be screwed in straight by hand with a screwdriver. Getting started in strabismus causes all sorts of problems. One trick I use is to cut off the head of a screw that is convenient to put in. Then screw on some nuts and connect them so that the screw sticks out just enough to put it in Screw the bit. Now place the assembly in the drill press. Place the work piece on the table and lower the bit off into the hole. Rotate the chuck by hand to insert the bit into the hole. This will ensure the insert goes in straight. Rotating the chuck the other way will push the bolt out leaving the insert in place. Along with the bits and punches, I keep my little homemade insertion tool.

Pros
  • FUNCTION: Used primarily for hardwood, they have a threaded design that provides more holding power when inserted into a pre-drilled hole and prevents the wood insert nut from rotating or pulling out
Cons
  • Almost never
