Review on ๐Ÿง‚ Enhance Your Culinary Experience with OXO Good Grips Radial Pepper Grinder by Rick Rogers

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The first was 5 stars. Not so for a replacement.

update 8/2021. it eventually died and was replaced by a meat grinder of the same type. after a few months of use, something (peppercorn) got stuck in it and was difficult to turn. When twisted harder, the steel shaft connection in the handle broke, so it's now a dead grinder. The 5 stars were for the original but the replacement which was relatively new and hardly used gets 1 star. We're buying a different type this time, so read the negatives to see how the newer one actually fares. First review. The best pepper mill I've ever had is now grinding again. The contents fell out and got into my spaghetti so I figured they were dead and needed replacing. Luckily all parts were recovered, none were swallowed and I was able to identify and fix the problem. There is a small locking ring that fits over the cut out in the shaft and prevents the grinder and pepper section from falling out. It came loose so I carefully removed the clear plastic door, tightened the clip but with the help of needle nose pliers, put everything back in place and snapped the clip back into place, and voila, all is well again. This is a common clip I use when repairing my garden and lawn equipment. So if it comes loose again, I just attach a new clip. No damage has been done and the pepper is ground to perfection. First review to follow... I bought it in April 2012 for the same price it's listed today...about $12. The locking ring that snaps inside to hold the grinding mechanism in place broke off as I was grinding the pasta and everything fell out and down and out, so I pulled out a few pepper balls and got on with my work. I think I can snap it back in place with a long needle nose pliers and try, but now I don't want to bet it'll never happen again even if I squeeze the locking ring a little. A lot of force is applied to it during the milling process, so it's probably better to replace it. I have no complaints about him and I have lived with him for so many years and he has more than paid for itself. I've become a fan of Oxo and have added a number of their kitchen essentials to my most-used items...like a brushed stainless steel spoon, steel can opener, and batter mixer with stainless steel blades and cutter. I understand why this is Revain's choice and it has such positive reviews so I'll be buying another one and trying to fix the old one just to test...because I don't want it using anything like homemade hot water bowl falls apart again . Soup. Considering the years I've used it almost daily in a family of two adults, it's worth it. I don't know what the life expectancy of a pepper mill is, but it lost a star for falling apart rather than wearing out, which I would call sparing use of no more than a few handles per use. I originally bought it for the looks and because it had a ceramic grinder rather than a metal grinder. The grinding process is easy with the offset handle and as I love coarsely ground peppers there aren't many alternatives to grinding them yourself as we can only find finely ground peppers in our local shops (40 miles away). It doesn't disassemble...on purpose...so it's not that easy to clean.

Pros
  • Ceramic mechanism adjustable for coarse or fine grinding.
Cons
  • cord is shorter than other picks.
