Terrible! Impossible to finish - splinter forever

I knew they were unfinished and that wasn't a problem. My husband makes wooden furniture and toys so he sanded them down and finished. But it was just impossible to finish! They're still chipping and scratching like crazy. We bought these as Montessori trays for our little one, but now they just need to be thrown away (they also had very ugly pieces of plywood). Edit: Also, the company never contacted me to offer a replacement or refund.
