Review on 🚴 Enhance Your Cycling Performance with Avid Speed Dial 7 Bicycle Brake Lever Set by Steve Guillen

Revainrating 5 out of 5

My favorite cable brake levers are almost as good as hydraulic brake levers

For first time buyers based on reviews this brake lever set is my personal favorite. They are standard on my recumbent trike, paired with Avid BB7 disc brakes and Avid G2 rotors. I've had a lot of bikes and each one has different brakes. There were Tektro brakes which looked like a joke as they were so bad and didn't work as well as rim brakes. I've also ridden road bikes that have pretty poor brakes (designed for light weight and speed rather than stopping) but they work when needed. However, I will limit this review to my SD-7 and Shimano hydraulics to compare against them. On my recumbent I switched between an Avid BB7 paired with these SD-7 arms and Shimano Deore M615 hydraulics. Avid is rated as some of the best cable disc brakes out there, and Shimano is one of the best hydraulic systems out there (budget, not super ridiculous). Shimano are amazing with great modulation and feel. They gave me confidence and inspired me to brake later in the corners. However, the BB7 and SD-7 is an amazing combo that rivals Shimano. First, the levers are adjustable to change the position of the lever and the position of the cable. This helps this lever achieve better modulation than any other cable brake lever I've used. The levers are also the right size for mountain biking. Shimano had a 2-3 pin lever, while the SD-7 could use all pins. This gives the SD-7 a performance advantage over traditional brakes. The adjustable cable tension position, which is the red button, allows you to dial in the mechanical advantage you get with the levers. I leave mine in the maximum advantage position and they work great. In terms of power, SD-7 levers and hydraulic levers are very similar. Each works very well when set up correctly, although the hydraulics are a bit small in my opinion. In terms of modulation, the SD-7s are the best at reproducing hydraulics, but they're not the same. However, very good. In summary, these levers make cable operated brakes much more powerful than traditional levers and offer the user greater leverage. I also installed a set of these levers on a road bike with rim brakes. Day and night difference in performance and stop. I considered buying the FR-5 for $10 less, but the extra money was well spent. The adjustment knob makes up for the difference in dollars. You won't be disappointed with these levers on any cable brake you use.
