I am a subsidiary of a multinational MSP and have deployed hundreds of Mikrotik devices. In short, this is the best value for money router for SMBs. The RB3011 is a real monster router for the price. $170 for 1U 10-port Gigabit, SFP and potential 6Gb/s WAN>LAN throughput. Although none of the ports can go faster than 1 Gbps, the computing power is still there. When I did a spec comparison between this and, for example, the equivalent Sonicwall (already cheaper hardware), it cost $170 for the RB3011-RM versus $3400 for the Sonicwall NSA 2600 plus other features. When you hold the device it looks like a prop, it's almost empty as Mikrotik designs its hardware based on CPU-based routing via dedicated hardware. This allows the feature set to be updated over time, improving reliability and significantly reducing costs. Although it's not uncommon for the Switch to fail. and is it possible for the processor to fail, when was the last time you saw a mid-range processor (not a server) just die completely? Probably pretty rare. We have several Mikrotik routers with over 3 years of use that just work with no issues. Another benefit is that everything is unlocked, no insane license fees like Cisco hardware! 50+ L2TP VPN users - no problem! MPLS, Wireless Access Point via CAPsMAN Wireless Manager, Layer7 filtering. Mikrotik gives you all the bells and whistles to get the job done, but you don't need to keep your finger on the pulse β you need to be familiar with networking concepts and spend some time learning their wiki. Mikrotik devices are designed for wireless ISPs and networking professionals, not computer novices. Good luck, have fun, for $170 there's no harm in buying one and playing around with it a bit. Once you see a set of features for yourself, you'll likely buy more of them.
