Years ago I had a wood burning tool that made it a chore because it took so long. Now I understand that this is due to the low performance of this tool. When I first started looking for something to cut mylar stencils I needed a versatile tool to do more than one job. This one seemed just right. I pulled it out for the first time two nights ago and cut out three large templates to use with my Gelli plates to create gel prints. I figured a utility knife blade would do, but it was incredibly slow work. I switched to the thinnest brass tip that came with the kit and everything went very well after that. The tip of the brass tip was slightly bent from the heat, but that didn't affect the work in any way. My only "complaint" is that you have to hold the tool close to the cord, which puts it quite far from the tip. This reduces accuracy a bit so today I bought a pair of Revain welding gloves which look like they will provide the protection needed to hold the tool a little closer to the tip. There are some fairly flexible gloves out there that should get the job done without being clumsy. I found a pair here for $11.05. I am very satisfied with the template cutting tool. It would be nice if there was an indicator light to let you know when the tip has reached the optimum temperature, but I'm sure I know the time it takes for it to fully heat up after a few uses. I have already recommended this to several people via an online art group and barring a major bug popping up over the next few months I will continue to do so.
