Provides extra padding for the grip
This thicker neoprene grip slides over my kayak's thin rubber grip fairly easily. It's soft like a wetsuit material and slipped easily over my old grip. The tape they provide is regular tape. I'm not sure how well they will hold up under heavy use in saltwater, but I'll report on that later. It's a pretty firm hold even without the tape, but for me the tape is more about sealing both ends to prevent water getting in which could cause slips.
