So far so good! for electronic training collars

Let me say right at the beginning that I was initially skeptical about dog training collars. I was worried it would be some kind of torture device for my beagle pup. Thug, my year and a half old beagle rescuer, had no prior training as far as we could tell. He ran out the door and was a few blocks away from me before he got distracted enough for me to catch up and grab him. After several such outbreaks, we decided on this collar. I didn't want to put this on my pup if it might hurt him so I tried it on myself first. Holding it in hand, I was shocked with every level. No pain. More discomfort than anything, and the vibration setting was actually stronger than the highest (18) shock level, although at that level it was quite uncomfortable. So I put a collar on him and on a 20 foot leash I let him away from me. I followed the instructions and told him to come back. Having no reaction, I started on the lowest settings and at level 5 I had him stop and look at me. Then I pressed the sound button to mute the sound. I told him to come back, pressed level 5 and signal and he came back to me. We did that several times this Saturday and each time he came back to the point where the audio was enough for him to come back without a shock. On Sunday I decided to test it and the collar. I made sure the collar was on and active and went outside leaving the front door open enough for him to escape and he did exactly what I expected. He ran out into the open street. I yelled at him to stop and used a tone, not a shock, and he immediately stopped and turned around. I brought it in and checked again a few minutes later. This time he tried to sneak to the street and I called his name again and gave the signal and he stopped and came back. Since then I have only taken him off his leash in our garden to go about his business and he has learned how close he can get to the road. I don't even have to use a tone at this point as just calling out his name makes him think about his actions and stop. On rare occasions he seems to ignore my quick tone and gets back on track. I highly recommend this collar and am very happy with the result. If he can get our mostly nose driven beagle to stop and think then I think he can work with just about any dog.
