My daughter hated wearing the vest in the water because she said she would choke on it. Along with an uncomfortable strap under her ass. We were going on vacation to the beach and knew she wasn't going to like the water in her vest. My wife found this life jacket and it saved my life. After I put it on my daughter she was already complaining but as soon as it was put on and she went in the water she fell in love. This keeps her afloat and she swims on her own. I would say get this for any kid that wants to be in the water but hates their vest. I see this would be a great introduction to how to swim alone.
