I had an approximately 4 inch tear in the bottom of our Hobie kayak that someone had previously improperly repaired. This kit allowed me to make the permanent fix I needed. The kit itself is suitable for a one-off repair or light hobby, but slightly lighter for any body work or serious patching job. The type of plastic is not specified, which would be helpful. Matching the type to the repaired item guarantees good performance. . Let the tip do its job and don't press too hard. The kayak is claimed to be HDPE Type 2. I used the matching paint from a clean recycled bottle cut into strips. If your damage is a bit large (actually long) like mine was, be careful because when a large area heats up it can tend to sink in if not supported from below. It seemed to work slowly and steadily bit by bit. Given the cost of the tool, it was a cheap, reasonable solution.
